About
Calliope is Buena Park Library District’s Teen Digital Literary Magazine. Inspired by the Greek muse of eloquence and poetry, our magazine aims to amplify creative voices and raise conversations in the community. Every quarter, a new theme will be announced and middle/high school students who live in or near Buena Park can submit art, poetry, short stories, and media (books, movies, TV shows, music) reviews related to the theme. Participants will not only have their work published, but will be given service hours as a reward for their work.
Themes
The first theme of our Digital Literary Magazine will be: ⋆✦⋆ Cosmic Connections ⋆✦⋆
Our first theme is cosmic connections, which refers to one’s perception of their connection to the world despite the ever growing expansion of the universe and increased loneliness in a more connected and virtual world. Although technology has evolved rapidly over time and has allowed us to communicate with others from all around the globe, feelings of anxiety and loneliness have become more intense over time. Why is it that despite living in a more connected world, we are left feeling more anxious than ever before? Loneliness is a paradoxical feeling as it is a universal experience yet leaves many feeling despair and alienation. This theme seeks to answer these questions and discuss how such emotions are a quintessential part of being human.

Message From the Editor:
Hello! My name is Felicity Nguyen. I'm a senior at Oxford Academy. I created Calliope because I wanted to raise interesting conversations through art and prose and allow others the opportunity for creative self-expression. A fun fact about me is that I have an Etsy shop where I sell cards and stickers of my own designs. :)
